Cannabis has been around for decades, especially here in the U.S. Even though it has been around for years, many people aren’t aware of its many benefits. One of these benefits is the medicinal value it holds. In fact, medicinal CBD has a much longer history than most people assume – dating back to the early 1900s.
Here’s a look into the history of medicinal CBD over the years:
The Discovery of CBD
Around the 1940s, the pharmaceutical industry was booming. Researchers were finding many new ways to address health issues through medicine. During this time, Roger Adams was the first person to successfully isolate and extract CBD from cannabis. By the 1960s, Dr. Raphael Mecholulam, who is now commonly referred to as the “godfather of cannabis research,” became interested in what these isolated molecules were and what they could do. So, he decided to investigate.
In 1963, Dr. Mecholulam was able to uncover the structure of CBD molecules and drive research into how they worked compared to other cannabis particles like THC. From this research, it was discovered that CBD did not contain the same properties as THC, and it also lacked the compounds that make THC psychoactive. Because of this, different ways to harness the healing power of CBD began.
Research Leading to Medicinal Uses of CBD
The discovery of CBD led to large amounts of research to see what kind of medicinal benefits it had. Here are some of the properties that were discovered over time:
- Epilepsy Aid
One of the first medicinal uses of CBD began when a trial of patients with epilepsy experienced positive effects from using CBD in the 1980s.
- Chronic Pain Relief
After its remarkable progress in the field of epilepsy, more research began to be done on CBD and its beneficial properties. It was soon found that CBD also showed amazing results for patients struggling with chronic pain due to its ability to work with the body’s endocannabinoid system.
- Neurodegenerative Diseases
By the late 1990s, states like California began to legalize medical marijuana, allowing research on cannabis to be drastically expanded. It was soon found out that CBD properties also contain benefits for a variety of different neurodegenerative diseases.
At this same time in the late 1990s, there were still many stigmas about cannabis and its properties. Because of this, research and medicinal use were stalled for a bit. It took around a decade for CBD research and its beneficial medicinal properties to start to become popular again.
Medicinal CBD has been on the rise for years now as more and more people begin to recognize how beneficial it can be. From helping people sleep to providing pain relief, there are a multitude of different ways to use CBD.
